In this podcast, Elise Stevens speaks to Tanya LaBuick about getting the most out of your projects by empowering project teams.

Tanya is the owner and Principal Consultant of LaBuick & Co, a consulting firm based in Canada that operates as a consortium of qualified contractors and companies who come together to bid sport, event or corporate project work.

LaBuick & Co offers a range of services including project management, design, event management, brand management and executive coaching. They believe people are the most important resource of any project.

Tanya has more than 20 years’ experience in strategy development, project management and program implementation. She is a globally certified project manager, trained leadership facilitator and certified business coach.

Her resume features work for a number of large-scale events including five Olympic and Paralympic Games, a number of Super Bowls and two FIFA Women’s World Cups.

  • Empowerment strengthens everyone on the team and ultimately the project and the organisation itself.
  • People think empowerment is closely aligned with delegation but it is also different, in that it is a tool for investing back into your team.
  • Empowering your project teams means finding out who is on your team and what are the skills and talents they possess that contribute back into the greater goal of the project or organisation.
  • Think of your project team as a sports team. Position your players where they’re strongest.
  • Project managers who bring the right project team to the table, and provide them with the necessary tools, resources and support, can trust the job will be done well.
  • Empowering your project teams can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. It can be rewarding to push a staff member out of their comfort zone and watch them rise to the challenge but project managers with a tendency to micro-manage can find it difficult.
  • Empowerment does not have to mean relinquishing control. Project managers can retain control and responsibility by communicating their intent well and checking in regularly.
  • When people believe that you trust them and believe in them, they are more likely to take chances and try new things than if they think you’re not in their corner.
  • Leadership means being uncomfortable at times, but pushing through it for the benefit of the team.
